The new Self-Portrait Challenge this month is “Red.” So far it is not very inspiring to me, somewhat boring actually. Maybe as the weeks go on some fabulous idea will pop into my brain beyond the obvious lips, toenails and Christmas decorations.
When I first went to college I was a gallery assistant as part of my grant requirements. One semester, if I’m remembering this correctly, Audrey Flack had a show in the main gallery and she had said something about artwork that always stuck with me. It went something like this:
“If you can’t make it good make it big. If you can’t make it big make it red.”
So I think it is my personal challenge to use red as the subject matter and not prejudice myself against it before I even start.
